September heralded Oren's return to preschool - this year in the Ichigo-gumi (strawberry class) at Suginoko and the Caterpillar class at Little Explorer's (just down the street). It was an adjustment to go to school 5 days a week - sadly including the end of his naps - but Oren was a trooper and quickly declared that he loves Suginoko!
At the end of September we had family members come from all directions to help us celebrate Naoki's 1st birthday! Obaachama and Jiji came, landing on the same day as Grandma. Grandpa and Meme had an epic adventure across the country and Auntie Mimi came for a whirlwind trip of less than 48 hours (which included 2 child-free transcontinental flights - lucky her!). Naoki's party theme was cars and trucks (and things that go!) but there was no gold bug anywhere to be found. As is tradition Ryan made the cake, experimenting with marshmallow fondant and learning how much he hates marshmallow fondant, and Naoki thoroughly enjoyed the chocolate decadence!
We also relished the last bits of summer weather in Seattle before the return of the rainy season (i.e. fall, winter, and spring) with several local bike trips including biking along Lake Washington.
