Between Bagels and Rice: September

September 5th was Oren's first day of preschool! He had been excited about the backpack and excited about the idea of school and even warned that Rugby and Jimmy would not be able to come in (they waited in the car), but he was understandably worried when we pulled up. He got out of the car willingly and Ryan walked him inside. Afterwards, he was quiet but did not cry. He was also very tired as he'd skipped his nap. Asked about his first day, Oren nodded that he'd had a good time and he made one friend - his teacher. He was very excited, however, to have his promised doughnut afterwards. We drove to Top Pot Donuts where apparently other parents had the same idea because they were out of doughnuts! Next we drove to the grocery store where fortunately they still had Top Pot doughnuts including one left with sprinkles that Oren chose for himself! He wouldn't say much while he devoured his doughnut but he did agree to go back to school on the next day.

On subsequent school days he has become more and more enthusiastic. His teachers note that he likes to paint and dance. On one day he was so tired he didn't even know that he'd gotten a flu shot at the doctor's office after school. Ryan held him carefully while he received the shot. Ryan said "and then you get a band-aid," and his first comment was "what's on the band-aid!?" He usually insists on a popsicle after school and it has been Ryan and Oren's tradition to sit out on the porch and have popsicles after his long day.
