May on the Olympic Penninsula

The three of us took a mini hiking vacation to the Olympic Peninsula. We spent three nights at the Hidden Haven Inn near Port Angeles. There we had a cottage where we grilled each night and made breakfast and lunch for our hikes. We finally explored Sol Duc Falls where we found beautiful rainbows from different angles. We did the Lover's Lane hike, a 7 mile trek up and over fallen trees where Hiroko forgot she was pregnant (sorry baby #2) and Oren decided he wanted to hike for the first time. We had him stepping around the mud and being lifted up over the scramble, but he held his own for a good part of the trail and kept saying "Ochan doing it!" How could we stop him?

On another day we went to the coast and saw the beautiful Second Beach where the sun glistened between huge rocks out in the water and deer came right up to the water's edge. We saw starfish and anemones in tide pools. Then we went to Cape Flattery, the most Northwest point of the continental United States and a gorgeous spot with seals in the water and Canada's mountainous islands just to the north.   On the way back Hiroko drove along the windy coast roads to prevent herself from getting carsick.  She took the turns so quickly that everyone else in the car got carsick - Oren suddenly started to cry and we had to stop and let him out for some fresh air and flat ginger ale to get him feeling better!

We also drove through the Olympic Game Park and saw llamas and Bison and Elk come right up to our windows! The llamas were kind of bullies - they would stand in front of the car so you stopped and then come to the windows looking for bread hand outs. The bison though were just scary as they ran along side the car. Oren hid behind Rugby and Jimmy.

It was a fun few days and the perfect time of year to start exploring the Olympic Peninsula.
