We just came back from a week in NY to visit the cousins and the grandparents and aunts and uncles. Our little samurai (see directly below) had a complete melt down on his second flight to New York, right when they put on the fasten seat belt signs. All the usual tricks - goldfish, puffs, pouch, juice - you love juice! - (sugar? would you like sugar on a stick, coated with more sugar?) failed. Ultimately we dealt with it and prayed no one was tweeting about the terrible parents around them.
But then we pulled into JFK and got to our lovely AirBnB in Brooklyn and the smell of bagels and pizza was in the air and it was like we'd never left! We jumped right into visiting family with a lovely dinner with the Stones' where Oren fit right back in with his older cousins, Kaisuke and Rioaki.
On Wednesday we had lunch with Grandpa and Meme. We continued to work on acclimating ourselves to the hot June NYC weather with a taste of Ample Hills ice cream! Then, Auntie Mimi babysat for Oren while we went to Daniel for an amazing dinner. The next day, we had lunch with Uncle Matthew and Aunt Michelle, and Oren met his little cousin Simon for the first time. Oren showed Simon how to down a pouch in seconds while Simon showed Oren how tasty Oren's Snoopy Matchbox car can be. The afternoon was spent with Hiroko's high school friends, David and Julie and Julie's kids - Bennett and Sophie, in Central Park and having some classic pizza at Ray's.
On Friday Oren spent time with Grandma, Thom and Grammy. Oren had an epic nap in Grandma's hotel room shower which fit the whole crib perfectly and then they had so much fun bouncing around! Oren in fact learned a new word: bounce! Then we went to Ryan's cousin, Blake and Mallory's wedding. Oren spent his first night away from Mama and had a big boy sleep over at Mark and Miwako's place.
Saturday was spent with Miwako, Mark, Kaisuke and Rioaki and feeling like true Brooklynites we spent the afternoon at the Brooklyn Bridge park. Oren especially liked the fine sprinklers at the "water laboratory" and got everyone wet walking through with him. Good thing he thought to bring a bathing suit.
Sunday was Father's day and we had arranged a lovely brunch at Sarabeth's with Grandpa and Meme and Uncle Matthew and his family. It was a successful meal with two kids under 2; ie no one got hurt (seriously) and nothing was thrown (very far)(that was breakable)(that wasn't replaceable). Oren ate up all the fruits and Simon reprised his efforts to show Oren how delicious that matchbox car can be. Something tells us Simon is going to be into cars one day. The evening was spent again with the Stones' where Oren got to experience a postbath dance party while Baba and Jiji watched over Facetime.
It was great to see family again and Oren had a fantastic time traipsing around NYC. Ultimately, however, and despite offers, we decided to take him home. Summer is here in Seattle too and it's going to be a fun one...
Someone needs a haircut.

Fascinated by the architecture at the Conrad Hotel lobby.
On a clear day you can see America.

Shenanigans!
I already said "cheese!"

Oren had such a good time going through the sprinklers - we all got wet.
